Alternative Treatments at our Depression Treatment Center

Depression can often be managed through psychotherapy or psychiatric treatments alone, but there are also new and exciting innovative techniques that can complement or take the place of other traditional treatment methods. Some of these treatments carry far fewer side effects than traditional antidepressants.

At BasePoint Psychiatry and Wellness’ Depression Treatment Center, patients have access to traditional treatment methods as well as the non-invasive FDA approved Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Spravato treatment.  Our team utilizes one of both of these methods as a part of a consultative individualized treatment plan. This helps to increase the quality of care for our patients.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS):

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, is a safe and effective treatment for depression that can be used alone or in combination with your other depression management protocols. TMS consists of delivering non-invasive MRI strength pulses to the forehead. The goal is to stimulate the root cause of mood disorders like depression, which are often thought to be based on a disconnect of the brain’s messaging system. Rather than just treating symptoms, like medication does, TMS stimulates the actual neurons, directly targeting the brain’s networks. These treatments take place in an outpatient setting.

What Can I Expect From TMS Treatment?

During a visit to our Depression Treatment Center for your TMS treatment, an electromagnetic coil will be placed gently against your scalp near your forehead. The electromagnet painlessly delivers a magnetic pulse that stimulates nerve cells to the brain region, regulating mood control and depression.

It’s thought that these areas of the brain have decreased activity in depression patients and that stimulating them can increase activity in the region. TMS therapy works by stimulating the cells in your prefrontal cortex with electromagnetic pulses delivered by an electromagnetic coil. When prefrontal cortex cells are treated in this way, their activity levels return to normal. The cells. throughout treatment can become more effective at regulating your mood.

The pulses are essentially nudging the brain, encouraging positive brain activity to reconnect these networks. The theory is that this will then help to create long-term relief from depression and often other mood disorders.

Spravato Treatment:
How Does it Work?

At BasePoint Psychiatry and Wellness, we are very excited about the FDA approval of Spravato by Johnson and Johnson as a mental health treatment. Spravato treats depression in a different way than standard antidepressants and has typically been the second line of treatment for patients who don’t achieve measurable results with traditional antidepressant therapy alone. Spravato has antidepressant properties, but has only recently been approved by the FDA as an official treatment option for conditions like depression. A recent Yale study found that Spravato, which is widely used as anesthesia during surgery, actually triggers glutamate production in the brain, which then prompts the brain to create new neural connections. This effect makes the brain more capable of creating new neural pathways. The result of these new pathways is that Spravato gives patients the opportunity to develop more positive behaviors and thoughts. This effect is not possible with antidepressant therapy alone. Most commonly used for the induction and maintenance of anesthesia, Spravato  recently became an alternative treatment for psychiatric disorders as well as chronic pain management. Spravato has been incorporated into the treatment of many psychiatric disorders, such as major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Spravato is not typically used as a first-line treatment. Spravato treatment is most often administered as a nasal spray option. Many patients have found effectiveness for depression when other methods are not providing results.

What is Different About Spravato Treatment?

Spravato treatment is typically administered in an outpatient setting. This treatment is delivered in a REMS certified treatment facility.. It is prescribed and administered as a nasal spray.  Spravato is a noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, whereas most antidepressants are SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors).

Spravato is typically only given when other antidepressants don’t work to improve depression or bipolar symptoms. Typically the effects of a Sprvato treatment last for anywhere from days to weeks. It is administered in tapered doses nasally over several weeks.

Spravato has also been used in cases of bipolar and personality disorders, but it is not effective for patients with psychosis, mania, or unstable cardiovascular disease. It is not a treatment that is suitable for children.

Am I a Candidate for
Spravato Treatments?

Children are not eligible for Spravato treatments. Adults with moderate to severe depression who have not found success with other treatment methods are good candidates for Spravato treatments. Spravato can also be effective as a treatment for bipolar and personality disorders.
