Is Counseling For Me?

Many believe that counseling is only for the treatment of serious mental health disorders. However, counseling services can treat a multitude of issues. Whether you’re experiencing chronic stress, a mood disorder, relationship problems, or just want to improve your own self-confidence or emotional intelligence, counseling is a great solution for overall wellness.

BasePoint Psychiatry and Wellness’ holistic approach to mental health care makes it a truly special place to seek counseling services. We believe psychotherapy, or talk therapy, plays a crucial role in most psychiatric disorders and that medicine alone is not always the solution. Our holistic approach includes diagnosing and treating our clients individually.

Psychotherapy

Treatment at BasePoint can include one or multiple modalities. Your care plan will be personalized to you, and may include any of the following:

BasePoint’s counseling team includes social workers, licensed professional counselors, nurse practitioners, and psychiatrists. Our diverse team of skilled professionals work individually with patients, but also collaborate frequently through team meetings.

This community platform enables them to share and teach each other the latest innovations from their respective fields. This allows us to serve our patients better, giving them unique access to an array of counseling services from a diverse team of specialists.

Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, involves talking, rather than medication. Some forms of psychotherapy last only a few sessions, while others are longer-term. Psychotherapy allows patients to verbal process and problem-solves collaboratively with a therapist to address thoughts and behaviors.

Psychotherapy may include cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectic behavioral therapy, or other methods.

Behavioral therapy helps teach patients to recognize how changes in behaviors can lead to an improvement in feelings. Together with your provider, you’ll assess behaviors and create strategies to adjust behaviors to produce more positive outcomes.

DBT, or Dialectical Behavior Therapy, is a therapy modality that teaches patients how to accept, process, and regulate emotions in healthier ways.

DBT’s basic principle is that by bringing together two opposites, acceptance, and change, we can best pave a way toward growth and healthy outcomes for our patients. DBT is often used to help patients with impulsive behaviors, or for the treatment of Bipolar Disorder, but it can be used for a variety of conditions. DBT helps teach skills like emotional regulation, mindfulness, and acceptance of pain.

Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, is a popular therapy technique that can help people examine and identify thought patterns and behaviors, and work alongside a therapist to adjust any patterns or behaviors that may be hindering optimal wellness.

CBT operates on the fundamental belief that the meaning we give to experiences affect our thoughts and emotions. If we can learn healthier tools for processing and understanding our experiences, then we can make adjustments that can have a positive impact on our attitudes, behaviors, feelings, and interactions with ourselves and others.

Family

Interpersonal and Family Therapy

Interpersonal therapy can address personal relationships, improving relationships in order to improve quality of life. Couples or marriage counseling is one form of interpersonal counseling.

In these sessions, patients learn listening and coping skills and work together with their provider to address behaviors and limiting beliefs that may be holding them back from more fulfilling relationships.

Family therapy examines the patient’s family systems and relationships, often including family members in sessions.

It operates from the belief that oftentimes our stressors are part of a larger family dynamic (for example, stress from marital conflict, or emotional trauma from a family event).
